Become a TAXI driver for Dubbo Radio Cabs

The taxi industry is a fully regulated service under the control of the NSW Transport Roads & Maritime services.

  • Persons who are interested in working in the taxi industry within New South Wales are required to be endorsed by the Transport Department of NSW. For metropolitan Sydney, drivers are required to complete the driver training course “VETAB” to be eligible for a city taxi endorsement, (see the taxi drivers authorisation package). For a country taxi endorsement this course is not required however a local training program may be required by that taxi co-operative.
  • You must have current NSW drivers Licence for at least twelve months and be at least twenty years of age.
  • You need English literacy that meets the equivalent of the hospitality industry level. You need to download the taxi pack and application form from the departments web site, www.transport.nsw.gov.au/taxi You need to read this information as it relates to the laws and regulations controlling the responsibilities of taxi drivers.
  • You must complete the application form with required photograph and a standard driver’s medical examination available from your general practitioner for approximately $70.00.
  • Submit the application and required payment of $100.00 to the Transport Department.
  • Drivers are not paid a salary they operate the business of the owner on a bailment system that rents the business for the period of the shift and pay’s the owner a percentage of the turnover.
  • You will need to have or apply for an Australian Business number and be registered for GST lodgements with the Australian Tax Office for purposes of GST and Tax returns.
  • You will be required to forward GST payments based on your retained earnings every three months and keep suitable records as drivers are essentially self-employed.

Requirements for working in Dubbo

  • A new driver will complete a 30 hour training program with a current operator.
  • The driver will be familiarised with the Co- Operatives rules of operation.
  • The driver will complete in car training that will familiarise them with the computer dispatch system, radio procedure and administration tasks that occur throughout a shift.
  • The driver will complete a comprehensive street knowledge study and written test on street knowledge and operating systems at the conclusion of in car training and in car systems.
  • The driver will be required to operate the Taxi to the Co-Operative’s standards of conduct, dress code and vehicle presentation.
